MORENO VALLEY (CBS/AP) — A young woman was just starting out her life, working her way up to manager at the restaurant she worked at and about to move into her first apartment, when she was shot during a robbery at a drive-through ATM.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a parking lot in Moreno Valley shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday and found that a car had struck a light pole. The driver, 23-year-old Carrie Thomas, had been shot several times and died at a hospital.

The crash occurred near the drive-through window of a credit union.

Thomas managed a local Shakey’s Pizza and was supposed to move into her first apartment Monday, KCAL 9′s Greg Mills reported. Crisis counselors are going to be made available at the restaurant for Thomas’ coworkers.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says that after closing on Sunday night, Thomas told her boss that she was going to withdraw cash from the ATM.

Investigators are examining footage from surveillance cameras in the parking lot for clues.
